In Preeti Mahapatra’s Rajya Sabha candidature, litmus test for other party MLAs eyeing 2017 BJP ticket

Preeti Mahapatra, who para-dropped from Gujarat and filed Rajya Sabha nomination as an Independent candidate forcing elections to 11 Upper House seats from Uttar Pradesh, is believed to have been assured by the BJP leadership in state that they will “arrange the votes” of several MLAs from other parties for her. Mahapatra, who heads an NGO, Krishnaleela
Foundation in Gujarat, had filed her nomination with support of the BJP. One rebel MLA each from Samajwadi Party and BSP, Ram Pal Yadav and Bala Prasad Awasthi, respectively, were named as proposers of Mahapatra’s candidature.
