Form panels to save peacocks: HC tells govt

Jaipur: Rajasthan High Court on Friday directed the state government to constitute state and district level committees for the protection of national bird peacock. 

The division bench of Justice Ajay Rastogi and DC Somnai order follows the hearing of a PIL by Babulal Jaju against the practice of rampant poaching of the national bird for its feathers in the state. The PIL said there is rampant poaching of peacocks and poachers brutally trap these birds. After which they break their legs to pull out the feathers and then kill the peacocks. The feathers are then sold in the market. He said it is high time to protect the national bird by adopting preventive measures. 

Ministry of environment & forest (Wild Life Division) on May 7 in 2014 had issued a circular asking to accord adequate protection to the peafowl. It also issued certain guidelines for urgent action to ensure that the national bird receives the priority of protection it deserves but the court said fficers had ensure that the circular are properly implemented. 
The court said the government should constitute committee at the state and district level. The district level committee would send report to the state level committee every six months for effective measures which have to be implemented for ensuring compliance of the provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The state-level committee will control and monitor district-level committees. The case has been posted for hearing on August 10.
