Amid South China Sea tension, India to supply two light frigates to the Philippines Navy

State-owned Kolkata-based Garden Reach Ship Builders & Engineers Ltd has won major order to construct and supply Two 2500 Tonne Frigates for the Philippines Navy against RFQ issued by the Department of National Defence, Government of Philippines vide their RFI . Light frigates will be based on Kamorta-class corvettes designed by the Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design which is to be completed in a very challenging and tight time line of 40 and 48 months respectively.
Timely delivery and quality are therefore the essence of this project. 2500 Tonne Frigates will be 109 meters long which will be powered by 04 Marine Diesel Engines in CODAD configuration to deliver 25 knots@ 85%MCR and will use two Controllable pitch propellers (CPP) for Propulsion. GRSE already has asked Expression of Interest from established Shipyards for joint venture /collaboration for the construction, testing, trials and delivery of the ships and also for sub-contracting . The Philippines is one of the several Asian nations concerned by China’s activity in the South China Sea. Beijing’s construction of artificial islands on reefs claimed by the Philippines and other neighbouring countries . In 2012, China took over the Scarborough reef, which is within the Philippines exclusive economic zone and rich in fish. Supply of light frigates by India to Manila will boost capabilities of Philippines Navy strengthening hands of the newly elected Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte who is very vocal about his countries disagreements with China.
